SEO basics for Australian small business websites

The search engine optimisation foundations every Australian small business website should have, from Google Business Profile to page titles and reviews.

By Zeedio

Search engine optimisation (SEO) sounds technical, but most of what matters for a small business comes down to a handful of foundations done well. One thing up front: nobody can guarantee rankings. Anyone who promises “page one in 30 days” is worth being wary of. What you can do is give search engines, and customers, every reason to choose you.

Set up your Google Business Profile

For local searches, your Google Business Profile is often seen before your website. It’s free. Claim it, choose accurate categories, add your service area or address, hours, photos and a link to your website, and keep it up to date.

Keep your business details consistent

Your business name, address or service area, and phone number should match everywhere they appear: your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Inconsistencies make it harder for search engines to trust the information.

Give each main service its own page

A single page listing everything you do is hard to rank. A dedicated page for each main service, explaining what it is, who it’s for, where you offer it and how to get started, gives search engines a clear match for what people search for.

Write clear page titles and descriptions

Each page’s title tag and meta description is what appears in search results. Make every title unique, put the most important words first, and keep it short enough not to be cut off. Descriptions should summarise the page and give people a reason to click.

Make it fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on phones. Optimised images, clean code and good hosting help pages load quickly. Test your pages with Google’s free PageSpeed Insights.

Answer your customers’ questions

Helpful content, such as FAQs, guides and pricing explanations, answers the questions customers type into Google. It also shows you know what you’re doing. Write for people first; search engines are built to reward that.

Collect genuine reviews

Ask happy customers to leave a review on Google, and reply to reviews, good and bad. Never write fake reviews or pay for them. Misleading reviews can breach the Australian Consumer Law, and they erode trust.

Connect Google Search Console

Search Console is free and shows which searches you appear for, which pages are indexed and any technical problems Google finds. Submit your sitemap there after launch.

Be patient and consistent

SEO builds over months, not days. Keep your information accurate, add useful content when you can, and look at Search Console regularly to see what’s working.

Every website we build includes SEO foundations: page titles and descriptions, structured data, a sitemap, fast loading and mobile-first design. See our packages for what’s included.
