Does my small business need a website if I’m on social media?
Social media is useful, but it isn’t a substitute for your own website. Here’s what a small business website does that Instagram and Facebook can’t, and when you might not need one yet.

Plenty of small businesses start out on Instagram or Facebook, and that’s a sensible way to begin. But as a business grows, relying only on social media starts to hold it back. Here’s what a small business website does that social media can’t, and how the two work best together.
What a website does that social media can’t
- You own it. Social platforms change their rules and algorithms, and accounts can be restricted or lost. Your website and domain belong to you.
- It shows up in Google. When people search for a service in their area, they usually find websites and Google Business Profiles, not social media posts.
- It builds credibility. Many customers look for a proper website before they get in touch or make a booking.
- It answers questions in one place. Services, prices, opening hours and FAQs are easy to find, instead of being buried in old posts.
- It captures enquiries. Quote forms, booking systems and online stores turn visitors into customers, even outside business hours.
Where social media still shines
Social media is great for staying in touch with existing customers, showing behind-the-scenes work and reaching new people through shares. It’s a conversation. Your website is the place those conversations lead to.
Use your website and social media together
Think of your website as your home base and your social profiles as signposts pointing to it. Put your website link in every bio, link to specific pages from your posts, and add your social profiles to your website so customers can follow along.
When you might not need a website yet
If you’re still testing a business idea, or it’s a hobby rather than a business, a free Google Business Profile and a social media account can be enough to start. Once you want more enquiries, or customers keep asking the same questions, it’s time for a website.
What a basic small business website needs
- A home page that says clearly what you do and who you do it for
- Your services, ideally with a page for each main service
- An About page that introduces the people behind the business
- A simple way to get in touch, such as a contact or quote form
- A design that works well on phones, where most people will see it
Our Starter package, from $1,800, covers exactly this: up to five pages, mobile-first design, a contact form and basic SEO setup. See what’s included.
