How to choose a web designer in Melbourne for your small business

What to look for when hiring a web designer in Melbourne: relevant work, a clear process, transparent pricing and ownership, plus the questions to ask before you sign.

Melbourne has no shortage of web designers, from solo freelancers to large agencies. Choosing the right one for your small business makes a real difference to how smoothly the project runs and how well the website works afterwards. This guide covers what to look for, the questions to ask and the red flags to avoid.

Freelancer, small studio or agency?

Freelancers and small studios usually mean you deal directly with the person designing and building your site, with lower overheads than a large agency. Agencies have bigger teams and can take on a wider range of services at once, which usually comes with higher prices. Neither is right for everyone: it depends on the size of your project and how you like to work.

What to look for in a web designer

  • Relevant work. Look at websites they’ve built. Are they clear, fast and easy to use on a phone?
  • A clear process. A good designer can explain each stage, from discovery and planning to design, development and launch.
  • Transparent pricing. You should get a written quote that explains what’s included and what costs extra.
  • Mobile-first design. Open their own website on your phone. If it’s awkward to use, yours may be too.
  • SEO foundations included. Page titles, descriptions, a sitemap and fast loading should be standard, not an optional extra.
  • Clear communication. Notice how quickly and clearly they reply before you’ve paid anything.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. Who will own the domain, the website and its content? The answer should be you.
  2. What exactly is included in the price, and what would cost extra?
  3. How many rounds of design changes are included?
  4. Will I be able to update text and images myself?
  5. What happens after launch if something needs fixing or changing?
  6. What ongoing costs should I budget for, such as hosting, the domain and any subscriptions?

Red flags to watch for

  • Guaranteed Google rankings. Nobody controls Google’s results, so promises like “page one in 30 days” are a warning sign.
  • The domain registered in their name. Your domain should belong to your business.
  • No written quote or scope. Vague agreements lead to surprise costs.
  • Pressure to decide quickly. A good designer is happy to answer questions and give you time.

Does it matter if your web designer is local?

A lot of website work happens by email and video call, so you don’t have to hire someone nearby. A Melbourne-based web designer does bring some advantages, though: the same time zone, an understanding of the local market, and the option to meet in person if you prefer.

Before you start contacting designers, it helps to know roughly what you need. Our guide to what to prepare before building a website walks through it, and our website cost guide explains what affects the price.
